You probably have several questions about the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on the independent writing industry:

  • What are the implications of the coronavirus pandemic for freelance writers?
  • How the COVID-19 pandemic has affected freelance writers get jobs and / or get paid?
  • More importantly, how do freelance writers feel about what the future holds for the coronavirus pandemic?

I have answers to the above questions and more!

To assess the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on freelance writers and the independent writing industry in general, Writers in charge surveyed its audience and came to the following conclusions:

1. 71 percent of freelance writers lost business due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The freelance writing industry is apparently not immune to the devastation caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

Writers in Charge data shows that 71 percent of freelance writers lost business due to the COVID-19 pandemic; many writers have lost everything their clients while others have seen their activity decline in one way or another.

  • 55.4% of freelance writers saw their business decline.
  • 15.7 percent of freelance writers lost all of their clients as a result of COVID-19.

2. 28.9 percent of freelance writers have not been affected – or have seen their business grow – due to COVID-19.

While the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on freelance writers is significant, a good percentage of freelance writers have seen no negative effects from the pandemic.

  • For 21.9% of freelance writers, activity has remained stable since the start of the pandemic.
  • For 7% of freelance writers, business actually increased due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

3. 58.7% of independent writing projects were postponed or canceled due to COVID 19.

Projects already ordered are not affected by the overwhelming effect of COVID-19. The majority of freelance writers have had their projects postponed or canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

  • For 38.6% of freelance writers, the projects they were working on were postponed due to COVID-19.
  • For 20.1% of freelance writers, the projects they were working on were canceled due to COVID-19.

4. 41.2% of independent writing projects are not affected by the coronavirus pandemic.

COVID-19 is not bad news for freelance writing projects. According to data collected from the Writers in Charge survey, 41.2% of projects ordered before COVID-19 were able to continue despite the pandemic.

5. 59.1 percent of freelance writers saw client response stop or decline due to COVID-19.

Many freelance writers no longer hear from customers due to COVID-19, and many have seen customer responses decrease due to COVID-19.

  • For 27.1% of freelance writers, customers completely stopped responding to messages.
  • For 32% of freelance writers, only a few customers stopped responding to messages.

6. For 40.9% of freelance writers, COVID-19 did not affect the response of clients to their messages.

Not all freelance writers have seen client responses suffer from COVID-19. While the majority of clients’ responses stopped or declined, a good percentage were not affected.

  • 40.9% of freelance writers still receive responses to their messages from customers.

7. Clients refused to pay 48.8% of the freelance writers because of COVID-19.

While no one could have predicted the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, that did not prevent some clients from using it to take advantage of freelance writers.

  • For 21.5% of freelance writers, most or all of their clients refuse to pay them because of COVID-19.
  • For 27.3% of freelance writers, only some of their clients refuse to pay them because of COVID-19.

8. Payments for the majority of freelance writers are not affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Although it is only a tiny majority, it is worth noting!

  • 51.2% of freelance writers saw their payments in no way affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

These freelance writers always receive all payments for their work, regardless of the effect of the pandemic.

9. 79.9 percent of freelance writers saw their income decrease due to COVID-19.

The majority of freelance writers have seen their income decrease due to the coronavirus pandemic:

  • 24.2% of freelance writers saw their income drop by 75% or more.
  • 14.5% of freelance writers saw their income drop from 50 to 75%.
  • 14.2% of freelance writers saw their income decrease by 25 to 50%.
  • 13.1% of freelance writers saw their income drop from 1 to 25%.

10. For 21.1% of freelance writers, revenues have remained stable or increased due to COVID-19.

While the negative impact of this crisis was significant for most freelance writers, it was a boom for others. 21.1 percent of freelance writers saw their income remain stable or increase due to the pandemic:

  • 15.5% of freelance writers saw their income remain stable and not affected by the crisis.
  • 4.6 percent of freelance writers have seen their income increase due to the pandemic.

11. 37.4 percent of freelance writers are either scared or unsure of the future due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

How The Pandemic Affects Freelance Writing Prospects

The majority of freelance writers remain neutral about the long-term effects of the pandemic on their business, but a large percentage fear:

  • 37.4% of freelance writers feel fearful and uncertain about the future because of COVID-19.
  • 43.3% of freelance writers feel neutral about the future because of COVID-19.
  • 19.3% of freelance writers feel even more confident about the future thanks to COVID-19.

12. The impact of COVID-19 is more pronounced for freelance writers because most freelance writers have only a limited number of clients.

Most freelance writers work with a limited number of clients, which has resulted in COVID-19 having much more impact on them.

More precisely:

  • 41.5 percent of freelance writers have only 1 or 2 clients.
  • 39.2% of freelance writers have between 2 and 5 clients.
  • 11.9% of freelance writers have between 5 and 10 clients.
  • 7.5% of freelance writers have more than 10 clients.

13. The impact of COVID-19 is more pronounced for freelance writers, as most freelance writers tend to be in areas where the impact of COVID-19 is much more severe.

Here is a breakdown of the main industries in which freelance writers work:

  • 15 percent of freelance writers work in the health / wellness / medical industry
  • 13.3% of freelance writers work in the marketing sector
  • 13.3% of freelance writers work in the technology sector
  • 10.1% of freelance writers work in the education sector
  • 5.8% of freelance writers work in the financial sector
  • 4.9 percent of freelance writers work in the travel industry
  • 3.2 percent of freelance writers work in the hotel and transportation sector
  • 2.4% of freelance writers work in the agricultural sector
  • 2.2% of freelance writers work in the environment sector
  • 1.7% of freelance writers work in the real estate industry

While the health / wellness / medical industry will do very well, and even thrive, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, when we combine the percentage of freelance writers working in other industries, we can see that many more freelance writers are working in industries where the impact of the pandemic is more severe.

Survey methodology

To gather the data summarized above, Writers in Charge asked freelance writers a series of questions to assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on their businesses. The survey was mainly presented to readers and subscribers of the Writers in Charge blog, which is made up of a very diverse audience of freelance writers from more than 180 countries.

A total of 632 freelance writers submitted responses, and based on the survey data:

  • 51.5 percent of freelance writers are men.
  • 48.5% of freelance writers are women.
  • 31.1% have been freelance writers for less than a year.
  • 19.2% have been freelance writers for 1 to 2 years.
  • 20.9% have been freelance writers for 2 to 5 years.
  • 28.8% have been freelance writers for 5 years or more.
